Our Story

Equitas, Inc. was formed in November 2007. Our first initiative was to raise public awareness about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan by organizing Charlotte Torch Rally. Speakers included John Prendergast, David Johnson, and Senator Robert Pittinger. Music was provided by Lamont Heibert and Ten Shekel Shirt. The event was a huge success. We had approximately 400 in attendance, and were able to raise money to support Silent Images (provides clean water and medicine to refugees in Sudan) and Sudanese Scholarship Fund (assists with college tuition for Sudanese refugees that have resettled in the Charlotte area).

In 2010, we have a fresh vision of global humanitarian aid and advocacy. Steve Cook, President of Equitas, and Scott Hofert, an Equitas board member, recently returned from an exploratory trip to Malawi, Africa (view photos). Malawi is the one of the poorest nations in the world, and has overwhelming needs of food, clean water, and medicine. Although Equitas will continue to work to end the genocide in Darfur by raising public awareness, and will support local organizations involved in providing assistance to Sudanese refugees, we have shifted our fundraising efforts toward the poverty-stricken country of Malawi, Africa.
